In what has become a celebrated annual forum for children in private schools in Lagos to showcase their artistic talents and prowess, the King’s Children’s Foundation, an NGO and social responsibility arm of The King’s School, (a private school located in Gbagada, Lagos) organised its 2018 10th annual Children’s Art Competition and Exhibition.

What started as a dream and a small acorn seed in 2008 has grown in impact and size to gradually becoming a frame of reference for arts teachers across private primary schools in Lagos. What started with just two sponsors has grown to having six corporate sponsors as at the last exhibition. The competition/exhibition is organised as part of the vision at The Kings Children’s Foundation in encouraging every child to achieve and fulfil their full potentials. The foundation also decided to focus on younger children because arts completion and indeed many other school competitions are organised all the time for older children and teenagers. Younger children and pre-schoolers also happen to be the primary focus at The King’s Children’s Foundation.

The Executive Director of the foundation, Mrs. Victoria Tandoh said “Art is a very important element of a child’s learning experience. It gives children a unique way to express themselves and helps them to relate to culture and life around them. It also allows the child to experiment with textures, shapes, and colours as well as offering experiences that help increase a child’s observation skills, fine motor strength and eye hand co-ordination.”

In 2010, winning entries at the competition were on display at the London International Gallery of Children’s Art where much commendation was heaped on the children for such superlative works.

Judges for the competition are drawn annually from the National Gallery of Arts. Here are pictures from this year’s competition and exhibition
