The ceiling is a huge swath of real estate in a room, yet its colour is often overlooked as a conscious design choice. Most times, home owners and designers just play it safe and go for white. After all, it goes with almost everything in the room — and someone once said a white ceiling makes a room feel bigger and brighter.

While this is often true, painting your ceiling a colour other than white isn’t necessarily a bad choice. In fact, its dramatic effect has many design benefits. Designers don’t specify other colours a lot though because once you paint one ceiling anything other than white in a house, you really should keep going so that you create flow. Then if you want to change a colour in a room, you have to change the ceiling too.

Although it’s tempting to avoid, committing to colour (and then choosing the right one!) totally transforms a room. Painting the ceiling a totally different, or contrasting, colour adds character and interest.

If you’re tempted to step out of your comfort zone, maybe you may want to try yellow. A yellow ceiling brings a bright, refreshing punch of colour to any room. With its warmth and energy, yellow transforms an ordinary space into an interesting and happy space. A yellow ceiling allows your eye to dance around the room. It can amp up a stark white space or complement an already colorful room. Yellow is a great choice if you have white walls and neutral furniture.

Here are some examples of yellow painted ceilings, to get your creative juices flowing.
